What is RSS?

You may have seen the ginormous “Subscribe” button over to the right there. Big, looming, orange thing. And you might be asking “What is RSS?”

If you are asking that, you’ve come to the right place. But, instead of me just rewriting what’s already been written about several times over, how about I point you to an amazing article that explains RSS in a simple, easy to understand way.

Click here to read “How to explain RSS the Oprah way.” No, I’m not a fan of Oprah. But I am a fan of this article, so if you want to know what RSS is, go read it!

Then again, you might not have time to go read. I understand. Therefore, I’m going to post an excerpt from the Oprah RSS article and, hopefully, it’ll be enough to satiate you time-deprived readers out there. Here goes:

The technical acronym for RSS is “Really Simple Syndication”, an XML format that was created to syndicate news, and be a means to share content on the web. Now, to geeks and techies that means something special, but to everyday folks like you and me, what comes to mind is, “Uh, I don’t get it?”

So, to make RSS much easier to understand, in Oprah speak, RSS stands for: I’m “Ready for Some Stories”. It is a way online for you to get a quick list of the latest story headlines from all your favorite websites and blogs all in one place. How cool is that?
